A chronological account of events from the shooting of Brian Thompson through the ongoing legal proceedings.

Shooting of Brian Thompson
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel shortly before 7:00 a.m., where he was arriving for an annual investors conference. Bullet casings found at the scene are inscribed with the words "deny," "defend," and "depose." A nationwide manhunt begins.
Investigation & Manhunt
Investigators trace the shooter to a hostel in Upper Manhattan, where he registered under the alias "Mark Rosario" using a fake New Jersey driver's license. Evidence shows the suspect traveled by train to Philadelphia after the shooting.

A federal judge dismisses the firearms charge and the federal murder charge that carried the death penalty. The death penalty is officially off the table in the federal case.
No Appeal, Trials Scheduled
Federal prosecutors confirm they will not appeal the ruling removing the death penalty. Jury selection in the federal case is set for September 8, 2026. The state murder trial is set to begin June 8, 2026.
