Key Rulings & Developments
Defense Requests Trial Delays
Mangione's defense team asks to delay the federal trial from September 2026 to January 2027, citing the need for more preparation time. They also seek to push the state trial from June to September 2026. Federal prosecutors oppose the delay, and the scheduling conflict could affect other high-profile cases in the same court.
Federal Judge Dismisses Death-Penalty Charges
A federal judge dismisses two of the four federal charges: the firearms charge and the federal murder charge that carried the death penalty. This ruling officially takes the death penalty off the table. Federal prosecutors confirm in February that they will not appeal.
Terror-Related Murder Charges Dismissed
A New York state judge dismisses both first-degree murder charges that were filed under terrorism statutes. The prosecution's core charge of second-degree murder and other felony counts remain intact.
Suppression Hearings Conclude
Three weeks of suppression hearings take place in the state case, concluding December 18, 2025. The defense challenges the admissibility of key evidence, including items recovered during Mangione's arrest and statements made to police.
Plea status: Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges in both the state and federal cases. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
